Miss Ogyny

5 07 2011

I’ve long noted the tendency toward racism and xenophobia among the rabidly religious in the US. I had thought, however, that much of the institutional misogyny endemic in fundamental christianity had been muted and/or driven underground. It appears that this is not the case.

In some southern states, laws have been passed requiring any woman who suffers a miscarriage or stillbirth has to  prove that she did not cause the miscarriage or stillbirth. Suffering through a miscarriage is bad enough. Forcing women to defend themselves against criminal charges after such a traumatic experience borders on sadism. Scratch that- it is sadism. The more so since approximately 10-20% of all pregnancies spontaneously abort before the 20th week. This fact is apparently lost on the devotees of the christian caliphate in America. They’re not interested in facts or evidence, they’ve got to make sure none of the women get “uppity”.

Why does the Guardian, a British newspaper, seem to be the only news agency discussing the fact that the American Taliban are trying to put women in prison for suffering a miscarriage? Why is this not national news? Are the people in Mississippi and Alabama merely ignorant of what their elected representatives are doing in their name, or simply apathetic? Worse, are the people in those states so mind-controlled by their religion that they’ll accept any barbarism if the parson says it’s OK?

Elsewhere in the fundamentalist christian War Against Women, the state of Kansas seems to have decided that murdering George Tiller wasn’t enough to prevent women from getting abortions, so they’ve decided to get sneaky. They passed a law mandating that all abortion clinics or women’s health clinics in the state must meet some esoteric requirements for how the clinic is designed. The law demands that various rooms and offices be of specific sizes and dimensions. The rules are incredibly detailed- far more than the requirements for hospitals, for example- and were drawn up to be prohibitively expensive. The best part of this exercise was the fact that the minimum standards were not published or made available to the clinics in Kansas until three days before the law went into effect. Clinics are free to request a waiver or extension from these rules, but the law also grants the sole discretionary authority for approval of such requests with an appointed official- who just happens to be a rabid evangelical christian friend of the Governor and vehemently opposed to abortion for any reason.

For those of you not paying attention, allow me to translate: In direct contravention of federal law and multiple Supreme Court rulings, Kansas has effectively ended abortion in the state. Women with money or connections can still travel outside Kansas to get an abortion, but the large majority of women in Kansas are without enough money or connections. Those women have effectively lost the right to run their own lives and do with their bodies as they wish.

Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren’t they? They’re all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you’re born, you’re on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don’t want to know about you. They don’t want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re preborn, you’re fine; if you’re preschool, you’re fucked. Conservatives don’t give a shit about you until you reach ‘military age’. Then they think you are just fine. Just what they’ve been looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers. Pro-life… pro-life… These people aren’t pro-life, they’re killing doctors! What kind of pro-life is that? What, they’ll do anything they can to save a fetus but if it grows up to be a doctor they just might have to kill it? They’re not pro-life. You know what they are? They’re anti-woman. Simple as it gets, anti-woman. They don’t like them. They don’t like women. They believe a woman’s primary role is to function as a brood mare for the state. Pro-life… You don’t see many of these white anti-abortion women volunteering to have any black fetuses transplanted into their uteruses, do you? No, you don’t see them adopting a whole lot of crack babies, do you? No, that might be something Christ would do. ” — George Carlin

Why? Why is it so important for these christian fundamentalists to exert control over a woman’s body? Will the religious fuckwits in the Kansas state government pay for medical care for women who would be forced to carry all pregnancies to term? How about caring for the unwanted children the women of Kansas will be forced to bring into the world- will the would-be theocrats of Kansas provide them with homes, educations, and worthwhile lives? Will the fundamentalist ministers in Kansas provide for the surviving families of women who died from complications related to childbirth because abortions were not available for any reason?

I have an idea for you religious shitbags who demand the power to control the lives of others: if you don’t have a uterus, you don’t get any say in how it gets used. Shut the fuck up and mind your own damned business!

I love George!! He says it like it is and right to the point.
I don’t remember who but it was said that man invented g0d and put men in charge of g0d because they where insanely jealous of the only true g0d…a woman giving birth. I think they still are!

Not quite the same as your quote, but here’s a good one on that subject by RAH:

The shamans are forever yacking about their snake-oil “miracles.” I prefer the Real McCoy—a pregnant woman.

Yes I have the ‘Logbook of L.Long’ by RAH and I liked that quote as well.
